Is It That Great Gretsch Sound?

Image
Today is a cloudy day and i can't get bright picture of silver sparkle of my new guitar (but it's okay though, my old cellphone camera can handle this), oh yes it's a Gretsch guitar. The Gretsch G5236 electromatic pro jet 125th anniversary with silver sparkle finishing. It's a beautiful pre-owned guitar with nice deal, no scratch and made in China. here are bunch of pictures about it: Gretsch G5236 electromatic pro jet 125th anniversary Gretsch G5236 electromatic pro jet 125th anniversary Gretsch G5236 electromatic pro jet 125th anniversary And I like it!! this electromatic pro jet defines overdrive and distortion effects in wide range although it seems i'll never get tele twang sound or strat glassy tone from it (of course, it's a Gretsch!). it has unique sound, yes that great Gretsch sound does exist. Its pickups and chambered body deliver tones nicely through amps, even direct input to mixer. Gretsch G5236 electromatic pro jet 125th an...

Fender Stratocaster Highway One, is it the ONE?

Image
last week i got lucky. my friend lent me his Fender Stratocaster Highway One and it was my valuable moment of learning guitar characteristic. stratocaster has my respect because of its tone originality and how many songs made with this guitar, also how far the guitar players has become legends with this guitar existence. you can easily find names, let's say yngwie malmsteen, richie sambora, eric clapton and many more use the stratocaster as their main guitar, or using stratocaster as their tool of exploration (see a Frankenstrat ) you might be one of them. a stratocaster lover. i can't say I'm in it, but actually right now I'm still trying to get which series that suits me. and i got a milestone to start with, a Fender Stratocaster Highway One USA made, year 2002 i guess. here are the pics (it's relic!) : what i got from this guitar so far? well, i can't say i'm in love with this one. it was about againsts my guitar playing style. the vol...

Is this Frankenstrat bike bothering you?

Image
just few days ago i posted about EVH's Frankenstrat and today i found that one of my friend is Eddie's big fan (he's not a guitarist, he's a keyboardist). i never knew that until i saw him with his motorbike today. An EVH frankenstrat theme motorcycle and it's cute!. here I share its pic:   am I right or what? i saw a lot of people have similar ideas about getting inspired by their idols. Actually it's the best idea so far in learning guitar. get inspired by your favorite guitarists. you can start with almost everything and every element of this "get inspired" idea will help you in finding your guitar playing identity. surely you know what I'm talking about now isn't about being a copycat, while actually it is fun when we can do our guitar idol licks and show them off :D well, since I'm a guitar learner, and i guess I'm a novice, so there's nothing more i can talk about this getting inspired idea. all i can do is sharing mo...

The standard Guitar tuning, EADGBE tuning

Image
The standard Guitar tunings assign the string pitches as E, A, D, G, B, and high E to the open strings of guitars. By convention, the notes are ordered from lowest to highest. These particular pitches are used by the majority of guitarists. why? Standard Guitar tuning made our left hand moves easily to play scales and chords with simple fingering logic. is there the best way of tuning your guitar in standard tuning? yes, and probably there are several ways in tuning your guitar. basically EADGBE tuning notes are from low-to-high note order, WHILE the guitar strings order starts from the thinnest string as first string, so we can see them like this: - 1st String is high E note(e), which its Scientific pitch notation is E4 and its frequency is 329.63 Hz - 2nd String  is  B note (B), which its Scientific pitch notation is B3 and its frequency is 246.94 Hz - 3rd String  is G note (G), which its Scientific pitch notation is G3 and its frequency is 196.00 Hz - 4th Stri...

Have You Ever Been Through The Never?

Image
Yes, Metallica will take you there. It's 2013 and it is the time for everyone to experience Through the Never with +Metallica  . this super heavy-metal band had made a real existence to its fans throughout the world with this movie. What we will see is actually a thriller concert film, which is new for me. the movie title itself is from the song with the same title  "Through the Never" from Metallica's black album in 1991. the movie's early reviews have been positive. it has Rotten Tomatoes 82% fresh rating, the consensus states: "Imaginatively shot and edited, Metallica Through the Never is an electrifying, immersive concert film, though its fictional sequences are slightly less assured." while Peter Travers of Rolling Stone has his opinion "a full-throttle expression of rock & roll anarchy", and encouraged readers not to understand the plot, but to "live" it. Chris Tilly of IGN and Peter Rugg of The Village Voice stated a ...

Still Halloween and even scarier, the Frankenstrat

Image
while famous frankentele is Steve Morse 's, the Frankenstrat is Eddie Van Halen's creation. The name itself comes from the combination of Frankenstein name and Stratocaster, a famous Fender guitar model. for your information it is a american national treasure, "Frankenstrat" copy can be found at Washington D.C.'s American History Museum. The Frankenstrat is Van Halen's effort in combining the Fender appearance with classic Gibson guitar tonality. It was Gibson PAF humbucking bridge pickup, Floyd Rose tremolo and chrome hardware installed on ash Stratocaster body, maple neck and fretboard. Eddie painted it several times, and the now famous color combination is red body with white and black stripes. the Frankenstrat what he did is a heavy-modification. The Frankenstrat neck was continually being changed over times. and The first bridge was '58 Fender tremolo then he changed it to Floyd Rose bridges. The placement of the 1971 quarter was a spo...

it's Halloween, and it is Frankentele

Image
you know what time it is and there's nothing more interesting than a Frankentele. as you knew that telecaster gained incredible fans all over the world because its sound and its simplicity. there are lots of people want to have their own telecaster based on their personal ideas. simply taking telecasters into new genre without disrespecting its history. it's an amazing story, seeing what telecasters had been through. and i really want to start with the famous one, Steve Morse's  Frankenstein telecaster. we know who Frankenstein is as well as we know what a telecaster is. from what i got from musicradar's article about frankentele (you can read the details by following the link), it is really a constant revision and improvement guitar. Stratocaster neck attached into a Fender Telecaster body, installed Gibson Tune-o-matic bridge, a set of Gibson frets and a 12-string tailpiece, also a group of pickups were Steve Morse's ideas on how to build a frankentele. you...

Marshall MS-2, cute little hard rock served on your desk

Image
This Marshall MS-2 sounds louder than you think. yes, it's a mini-amps product by +Marshall Amplification  and you can have much fun with this. I bought this new and it's made by Marshall manufacture in Vietnam. Marshall Amplification is a British company, well-known as one of the best guitar amps builders. You may have the big ones, but for this Marshall MS2 Micro Amp , I'd say this is my good stuff. one thing i like about Marshall Amps is that they are being honest about the guitar tones. they will amplify anything that came out from any kind of guitar honestly. if your guitar has ugly sound (like my lovely first electric guitar), then Marshall amps will take that ugly tone into the loudest sound you've ever heard.  Actually it's a real good thing, if you want to buy a new guitar, please consider to hear it through Marshall Amps. (hear check sound: marshall ms-2 here ) here few pictures i made: quite nice isn't it? here i shared a video about ...

Les Paul Gibson, got any words of it?

Gibson Guitar is a worldwide guitar brand and i guess that every human in this world has met with its design. an American maker of guitars which successfully put their products into every guitarists' dream in tasting the great sound and experiencing its magnificent craftsmanship through guitar playing. and other instruments, now based in Nashville, Tennessee. in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Orville Gibson founded The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Steve Morse

Image
Mister Steven J. "Steve" Morse is one of American guitarists who has huge fans. some people know him as the founder of the Dixie Dregs, but i know him as the guitar player of Deep Purple since 1994. in the mid 1980s he is the member of Kansas. Steve Morse  Steve Morse has great live rig setup and he performs in such amazing way. for guitar learner like me, a piece of Steve Morse is a valuable stuff that will improves guitar techniques and understanding. yes, his old video lesson has been taught us in magnificent way. while the newest one is Steve Morse -- The Definitive Steve Morse (DVD) , I'd like to share his older one, "Steve Morse: the essential". in the "steve morse the essential", he explained some important issues about guitar learning. here they are: - opening tuning sound & equipments . in this section, Steve Morse gave his gear setup and how he use them in live performances. - learning complex parts . next session is how ...

Blues, why? Why not?

Image
Some say that when we learn guitar playing, it's a direct fast lane to Blues, and i believe that. Some of us might said "no! it's METAL! distortions! the spirit of on-stage performances take control!" or even such like, "you're totally misunderstood,  the notes will lead us into harmony, yet jazzy or classical, it's a way in understanding beautiful scientific-audible math.. bla bla.." "blahh.." Add blues on your playing yes, i still believe in blues . somehow it connects all guitar players, and connecting guitar players to other music players and the audiences. what is blues, actually? it's only a music genre, right? what's so special about it? here some thoughts i have about blues. blues is inside of guitarists' hands. it's pentatonic, just like world traditional scales in almost every cultures. when it comes to guitar playing, blues is the place where the wrong notes against the right ones and collaborate. it is...
